Deep beneath the Ionian Sea, in a glowing coral city called Mermaid Town, lived a bold inventor named Neridia. Half-mermaid, half-human, she spent years building the first-ever pearl-powered submarine. With it, she explored shipwrecks and traded stories with sea turtles and deep-sea dragons.
Today, she planned to visit the surface to meet her grandfather in Syracuse, Sicily. She packed her satchel, kissed her jellyfish lamp goodbye, and swam to her dock. But her submarine wouldn’t open. The key, a shimmering shard of moon coral, had vanished.
Panic prickled her scales.
She searched her shell library, overturned glowing stone benches, and questioned a suspicious octopus. She didn’t have much time—the surface tide waited for no one.
